Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) Test

What is an ABI Test?

An ABI Test or “Ankle-Brachial Index” is a non-invasive test that measures the blood pressure in the ankle compared to the blood pressure of the arm. This allows doctors to assess the blood flow to the legs and potentially diagnose Peripheral Arterial Disease.

What is Peripherial Arterial Disease?

PAD is a serious circulatory condition causing the narrowing of arteries, which results in reduced blood flow to the head, arms, stomach, and legs. Usually, PAD affects the arteries in the legs, causing pain while walking.  PAD can significantly impact your quality of life and, if left untreated, lead to severe complications.

PAD Symptom - Thigh pain

What are the Symptoms of PAD?

  • Pain in the muscles that happens at times of physical activity and subsides with rest
  • Leg weakness or numbness
  • Muscle cramping in the legs while walking or exercising
  • Leg pain that fails to subside after exercise
  • Wounds or sores on the foot or toes that do not heal or heal slowly
  • Discoloration of the skin on the foot
  • Dead tissue (Gangrene)
  • Decreased temperature of the leg or foot compared to other parts of your body
  • Slow hair and nail growth on feet and legs
  • Reduced pulse in legs or feet

What Are the Causes & Risk Factors of Peripheral Arterial Syndrome?

PAD develops when arteries narrow due to plaque buildup, reducing blood flow to the limbs. Smoking restricts oxygen and increases clot risks, while diabetes causes inflammation and stiffens arteries. High blood pressure strains arterial walls, and high cholesterol leads to fatty deposits. Genetics also play a role, increasing susceptibility.

Did you know that about 1 in 20 people over 50 have peripheral artery disease (PAD)? Are you at risk?

When is an ABI Test Recommended?

A healthcare provider may recommend an ABI Procedure Test if there is a risk of Peripheral Arterial Disease. An ABI test can help diagnose PAD and prevent its progression, as well as identify people who could be at risk for coronary artery disease.
